Chapter 7

◆◆◆

The trio of heroes headed up the stairs, reinvigorated by the afterglow of their steamy encounter. Though they were still hungry, they had been satiated in other ways, and an undeniable radiance of energy seemed to emanate from each of them.

Audelia noted that she had felt the same sensation after her previous sexual encounter with Billy. She was exhausted, sure, but there was a power and confidence that wasn't there before—or, perhaps, it was there, but Billy's passionate embrace had coaxed it out of her—and now it was even stronger.

Kaya was bewildered by the boost in energy she felt. She'd never been so spry, so light on her feet. It was as though her every strength had been made stronger; her greatest attributes were now of a higher tier than they were just this morning. There was something supernatural about it, something she couldn't place, but she knew that the barbarian was to thank for it.

Billy crushed through the door to the next room as they reached the staircase's pinnacle. His strength now was ungodly. His muscles swelled with preternatural power. He, too, felt the effects of the afterglow of his embrace with his two companions.

The door shattered into splinters, but there was something waiting on the other side. At the center of the room, six armed men with the lower bodies of snakes and the upper bodies of scaly humans encircled a crimson crystal that rested upon a raised altar carved out of black and white marble, the same material that pervaded the walls and floors of the entire room. They bore spears, pikes, and other polearms, holding them steady as they glowered upon the intruders.

But this room wasn't so much a shrine as it was a laboratory. Tables littered with charts and diagrams were everywhere. Vials, cauldrons, mortars and pestles, and amphorae brimming with strange powders were everywhere to be seen. From the quills and ink stains on the wooden chairs, all the equipment shelves and desks, there was plenty of evidence that someone worked here regularly—and recently.

The six serpentmen hissed with malice as they eyed the intruders, but to the surprise of Billy and his companions, they did not move from their place around the crystal.

“They're protecting the crystal,” Billy noted.

“Then logic dictates that we should destroy it!” Audelia suggested, brandishing her blades.

“I agree,” the redhead said.

Billy wasn’t so sure. “But maybe it's useful.”

“To someone it surely is,” Audelia replied. “But not to us.”

The barbarian nodded. He couldn't think of a solid reason why they needed the damn thing, now that he pressed himself. It was likely better to do as Audelia and Kaya suggested. Perhaps this was the center of the wizard's power? Perhaps this was the ticket to beating him and solving the mystery of this tower.

“Charge!” Billy roared, and the three of them made haste toward the slithering guards. It was chaos, as swords and axes deflected pikes and spears. Billy suffered no wounds from the assault, but Kaya was pierced in the shoulder.
